As part of the NSW Government’s Saving Lives on Country Roads program we are proposing a number of safety improvements on the old Pacific Highway, now known as Big River Way, between Glenugie and Tyndale.
With the recent opening of the Glenugie to Tyndale section of the Pacific Highway upgrade, it is expected the number of heavy vehicles travelling Big River Way between Tyndale to South Grafton will reduce by about 75 per cent. Big River Way will remain the main connection to the New England region, and the Summerland Way. The proposed safety improvements will provide a safer road network for all road users. Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has engaged Lendlease to build the eight kilometre upgrade of the Pacific Highway between Wells Crossing and Glenugie.
TfNSW has refined the intersection design at Parker, Bald Knob and Franklins roads. The design refinements, which improve road user safety, have been carefully considered following review of other intersections in the area where a direct right turn in arrangement has been provided, such as Kungala Road. The post construction operational noise assessment compares actual traffic noise levels from the highway upgrade against the predicted road traffic noise levels used in the project design.

This assessment for the Oxley Highway to Kundabung Pacific Highway upgrade has been completed and the report is now available.

Transport for NSW has undertaken low noise diamond grinding on three sections of existing concrete pavement along the Pacific Highway upgrade near Valla Beach area. This trial was part of the Nambucca Heads to Urunga Pacific Highway upgrade project and was proposed as a trial to determine if there is a noise benefit from the grinding process. The trial has found the treatment has helped to reduce noise levels for home owners in the local community with no further noise treatments required. Overall the report found the diamond ground surface produced comparable noise levels to the traditionally ‘low noise’ pavement used on other areas of the Pacific Highway. When the Pacific Highway upgrade is complete we will be providing close to 10,000 hectares of native vegetation as a biodiversity offset, managed under legal conservation agreements, making it one of Australia’s largest offset programs.
